Past Projects & Successes: Funded Dr. Zimmerman’s work leading to wetland awareness and Dwarf Lake Iris and Hines Emerald dragonfly listing as Wisconsin endangered species. Current Projects: Effort to relocate Highway 57 route to prevent destruction of forest lands, established communities and native American sites. Sponsor Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) hearing on PCB damage awards plans for area. Scholarships. Essay contest. Citizen of Year award. On-going effort to minimize use of holding tanks including hiring Dr. Wm McConkey UWOshkosh as coordinator. Promoting adoption of a land use impact fee or real estate transfer tax.

Mission & Goals: To help permanently protect a variety of open space areas and, therefore, the unique quality of life treasured by Door County residents and visitors. The Fund accepts tax-deductible contributions and then annually awards grants to organizations involved in land preservation within the county.

 

Membership & Volunteer Activities: The Fund is a private, non-profit organization established in 1998. Minimum $50 annual contribution for business membership. Members can use the Green Fund logo and are recognized in various publications throughout the year and on the Fund’s website.

 

Past Projects & Successes: Assisted in the acquisition of green space by the Village of Ephraim, Crossroads at Big Creek, Door County Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy, City of Sturgeon Bay and County of Door.

 

Current Projects: The Fund does not undertake its own projects. Grants are distributed annually, in December. Requests for grant applications are distributed in the fall.

 

Working Partners: The Nature Conservancy, The Ridges and the Door County Land Trust are actively involved with the Fund’s board.

Mission & Goals: To permanently preserve the scenic beauty, open spaces and ecological integrity of Wisconsin’s Door County Peninsula

 

Membership & Volunteer Activities: 6 categories starting at $35 for an individual. Volunteers used for office help, land stewardship activities, monitors, special events, fund raising, trail work and computer data entry.

 

Past Projects & Successes: Over 3,000 acres under permanent protection.

 

Current Projects: Protecting lands on the Niagara Escarpment, Washington

Island and in Southern Door and open spaces in Northern Door.

Mission & Goals: To use education and coordination to support local community efforts to maintain or improve the health of our natural resources by fostering partnerships, providing funding, promoting a forum for discussion and supporting activities advocating a balance between land use and natural resource management, conservation and protection. Our main goal is to promote community solutions to problems that affect the overall health and welfare of the Lakeshore Basin ecosystem.

 

Membership & Volunteer Activities: Membership open to individuals upon payment of dues. Volunteers representing 10 partnering organizations serve on Grant Advisory Teams in 4 categories - Water Resources, Communication and Education, Land-use and Protection and Agricultural and Urban Pollution Prevention. Grants are awarded twice a year in June and November.

 

Past Projects & Successes: In June 2004 awarded 19 grants, including grant to Door County Land Trust to train volunteers and local landowners to combat invasive species through work parties at two State Natural areas; grant to Francis Hardy Center for the Arts for "Common Ground" exhibit; grant to The Nature Conservancy to provide basic information and training to town boards and local planning officials regarding wetland delineation methods and standards; grant to Door County Land Use Forum to create a biological inventory strategy which can be used to conserve and protect particular species and natural communities in Door County; and grant to Friends of the Ahnapee State Trail to collaborate with Door and Kewaunee County Parks Departments to design, print and distribute a map/brochure of the Ahnapee Trail.

 

Current Projects: Construction of a basin wide environmental education program.

Mission & Goals: To assess discharges and releases to ensure appropriate response, prevent spills, ensure that responsible parties clean up discharges of oil and releases of hazardous substances, mitigate the effects of spills that do occur and reduce the potential for spills or discharges outside U.S. waters from entering U.S. waters. To enforce all federal environmental protection laws in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations.

 

Past Projects & Successes: Numerous oil spill responses and clean up projects in Door and Brown Counties.

 

Working Partners: Green Bay Port and Waterways working group consisting of representatives of the Detachment, MSO Milwaukee, USCGMobile Bay, USCG Auxiliary, US Fish & Wildlife Service, Green Bay fire department, Brown County port manager, Wisconsin Department of Transportation, DNR, Koch Materials and U.S. Corps of Engineers.

 

Resources: Federally owned first aid spill response equipment, including response trailers with hard boom and sorbent boom located in Washington Island, Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay. Access to funding to ensure a proper response to a spill in the event the responsible party’s response is inadequate or the responsible party is unknown.

Mission & Goals: To issue Chapter 30 and 31, Wis. Stats. permits for alterations to navigable lakes and streams. Permits may be granted if the project does not adversely impact public rights and interests. In some cases permits can only be granted if they will be beneficial to public interests and rights.

 

Past Projects & Successes: Environmental assessment of solid structures on Green Bay in contested case hearings where Department and public oppose granting of permit for pier. Changes to Chapter 80, Wis. Stats., are being considered by the Wisconsin legislature.

Mission & Goals: Organized in 1946 by the Door County board "to assist landowners in conserving their soil, water and related resources."

 

Current Projects: Control of storm water, invasive species control, beach contamination source identification, mine reclamation, implementation of agricultural water quality practices.

 

Working Partners: Landowners, other units of government and related agencies.

 

Resources: Technical staff available to the public and other units of government to assist in addressing a wide variety of environmental and conservation issues. Department’s responsibilities include both voluntary and regulatory programs.

Mission & Goals: To support Newport State Park’s nature interpretive activities by leading field trips, giving nature programs, providing scientific materials, assisting on park work days, etc. To promote and protect the "wilderness" designation of the park.

 

Membership & Volunteer Activities: Members donate time and money toward the achievement of the society’s goals. Membership has a dues structure.

 

Past Projects & Successes: Provided funds to erect an historical kiosk illustrating Newport Park history. Provided computer system for park naturalist. Funded monarch butterfly migration study.

 

Current Projects: Ongoing fund raising toward building a new park headquarters building with an enlarged nature center.

 

Resources: We are ready to assist in conservation projects for Door County. Park nature center has booklets for sale on the "Silurian Sea" and the Hotz family heritage in the Park. The sale of T-shirts and caps helps toward funding for new nature center.

Past Projects & Successes: Park has a 95 year history of success.

 

Current Projects: Management of garlic mustard. Bat surveys. Ongoing programs for public and schools. Park is enlisting support for a possible "Friends" group in the future.

Mission & Goals: To support, assist and promote Potowatomi State Park through volunteer services and financial aid.

 

Membership & Volunteer Activities: Sliding dues scale. Members should have interest in park and support organization’s goals. Volunteers used for Nature Century support, spring cleanup of park and camp sites, cutting wood, planting trees and flower beds, trail and shoreline cleanup.

 

Past Projects & Successes: Helped fund new amphitheater. Developed camp store and nature center. Candlelight ski event in February. Replanted daisy field at campgrounds to native plants. Run Wild in October for fund raising.

 

Current Projects: Spring cleanup of trails, campsites and gutters. Purchase of blower to help with cleanup. Transplanting trees to bare spots in drives. Promote visiting lecturers in amphitheater.

Mission & Goals: To maintain a preserve for experiential, lifelong learning focused on science, history and the environment.

 

Membership & Volunteer Activities: Basic membership - $30. Annual Giving Clubs for operational costs are vital. Friends of the Crossroads group (dues $15 annually) hosts teaching, labor on site, organizes big events. Volunteers needed for maintenance, tree planting, trail building and helping with erosion control structures, etc.

 

Past Projects & Successes: Rerouted Big Creek and restored surrounding wetlands. Forest restoration. Septic system demonstration project.

 

Current Projects: Hosting beach monitoring research. Historic Village at the Crossroads. Building general store. Restoring Walter House.

Mission & Goals: To provide a forum for the discussion of land use issues; support conservation of Door peninsula’s natural, scenic, cultural and aesthetic resources and advocate for reasoned development consistent with county-wide smart growth plans.

 

Membership & Volunteer Activities: Non-profit, non-partisan, all volunteer organization open to all Door County property owners and visitors. Annual dues of $35 includes newsletters.

 

Past Projects & Successes: Supported and contributed $1,000 to beach monitoring and testing. Supported Door County Soil and Water Department protection of groundwater in mines and new developments. Supported Door County sanitarian in protection and education on safe drinking water. Opposed many small, solid dock piers and supported municipal docks. Challenged Door County planning department in spot zoning, inadequate plans and enforcement.

 

Current Projects: Continuing above activities plus supporting smart growth planning and opposing billboards in Door.

Mission & Goals: To maintain the primary natural, safe and aesthetic character of the Bay Shore Drive area.

 

Membership & Volunteer Activities: Full and part-time residents of Bay Shore Drive. Annual membership fee of $15. Volunteer activities include, serving on board, representing Association at Sevastopol and Egg Harbor Town Board meetings, County Resource Planning Committee and Board of Adjustment; assisting with mailings, computer, water sampling , etc.

 

Past Projects & Successes: Successful in getting Westwood Shores to increase screening from Bay Shore Drive. Successfully lobbied Sevastopol Town Board to establish a committee to do a land use study which was done and distributed. Consulted with state representative and local DNR regarding construction of private solid docks and made presentations at hearings - over three year period no dock permits issued and requests to build docks have declined.

 

Current Projects: Water testing at eight sites along Bay Shore Drive to be coordinated with base samples established by Door County Soil & Water Department.

Peninsula Planters Garden Club

Mission & Goals: The object of this organization shall be to stimulate an interest in gardening and the development of home grounds; to aid in the protection and conservation of forest, wildflowers and birds; and to promote civic beautification . " OUR PLEDGE - We will not surrender to our surroundings, but make peace with nature and begin making reparation for the damage we have to the objects of the club and willing to work toward their accomplishment. Meetings are the third Monday of each month. Members each have their own done to our air, land and our water. We will unify as members of our club and as Americans, in the common cause of restoring nature."

 

Membership & Volunteer Activities: Members should be sympathetic individual gardens and landscaping plus they join together on a voluntary basis to work on projects deemed important by the club majority.

 

Past Projects & Successes: Donation and planting of trees each Arbor Day, generally in one of the Sturgeon Bay parks. Additional funding raised to replace trees in Sunset Park destroyed by 1985 storm. Care of flowerbed adjacent to Little Lake for 30 years. Life members of The Ridges. Contributed to American Land Trust, Door County Land Trust and various other conservation and environmental projects. Planted spring bulbs in public areas. Provided funds for nature programs at Whitefish Dunes. Contributed $1,000 to Door County for purchase of land at Ellison Bay Bluff Park. Club programs on environmental issues, wildlife, trees and shrubs, birds, insects, weeds, harmful sprays, etc.

 

Current Projects: Contributed $500 to Potowatomi Park towards the new amphitheater. Also donated $700 towards a chair for the auditorium at the John Collins Center at the Crossroads at Big Creek. Have planted several trees as memorials and have made contributions to various Door County environmental.

 

Resources: Members knowledge on gardening and landscaping. Volunteer labor and monetary contributions for projects of interest to club members.
