Chamber e-Reminder
Well, we did it. We survived the Dog Days of Summer. As a kid growing up along the waters of Green Bay, the Dog Days of summer where signaled by the arrival of a dense green mat of algae that thickened the water and garnished the “Filet-O-Fish® “ sandwiches we created with flat rocks and dead alewives. Ah, those where the days. Fact is, the term “dog days” has been around for thousands of years. Most every culture uses this term and it refers to the celestial dog known as Canis Major – Orion’s hunting dog. The head of this mythical hound contains the brightest star in the heavens – 22 times brighter and twice as big as our Sun – Sirius. During the month of February this giant white star twinkles and shimmers and even lights up the snow on a moonless night but, as the seasons turn and the Dog star falls in sync with the rising and setting of the Sun, the sweltering heat was blamed on their convergence. In fact, without air conditioning or ice cream, there was such a dramatic increase in crime, illness and death that businesses closed and everyone was forced out of the cities to cool off by the sea – and, the Summer Vacation was born. “Do you want me to turn this chariot around?” The rest is history.
Think Spring – with Fall plantings This year the Chamber is proud to present a stunning selection of spring flowering bulbs from Holland Beauty and a second chance to purchase “Door County USA” Daffodil bulbs as well as a variety of native wildflower mixtures created for your needs.
