Chamber e-Reminder
Beware the Ides of March! Julius Caesar ignored such a warning – and look what happened to him! But, what really happened? Was his death caused by arrogance or carelessness? In Roman times, not only did they use V’s in place of U’s but, they didn’t count the days of the month from 1 through 30 either. Instead, three days in every month had names: Kalends fell on the 1st; Nones on the 5th or 7th; and Ides on the 13th or 15th. To make things worse, when a Roman wanted to say "March the 14th", she had to say: "the day before the Ides of March" (Thankfully, it goes faster in Latin). March the 6th would be: "The day before the None of March." (you never counted after, always before). April fool's day fell on “The Kalends of April." After the Ides (the 13th or 15th , according to the month) you counted the days to the Kalends of the next month. March the 16th was "17 days before the Kalends of April." (March 16th and April 1st counted as full days). Do you smell what I’m cooking here? A Roman had to know the rhyme “In March, July, October and May, the Nones fall on the 7th day.” And, when the date fell after the Ides, he, or she, had to be able to manipulate "thirty days hath September" to get the date right. Imagine the confusion! While it was said that Caesar “ignored” the warning – I’m feeling like it was a classic case of not platting all his Ides – so, let that be a lesson to ya! Phil
Convention Recap If you haven’t attended a Wisconsin Governor’s Convention on Tourism before, you might want to consider attending next year’s convention at the Ho-Chunk Casino, Hotel & Convention Center, March 12-14 in Wisconsin Dells. This was my first and it left quite an impression. From opening speakers to breakout sessions, delicious meals and social gatherings – the ideas and networking were always flowing. Additionally, we took advantage of our location and infiltrated the State’s Capital building. About 150 of us, divided up and met with elected officials to discuss the pending issues facing tourism in Wisconsin and the important contribution that tourism makes in strengthening our State’s economy. To take a peak at the many opportunities offered at the Governor’s Conference, check out the online agenda at: http://www.wigcot.org/index.htm
Rooms are filling up quickly so, if you have interest in attending next year’s conference, you need to reserve now. e-mail me for a list of resorts nearest the convention: phil@doorcounty.com Live’s so Good! Another exciting benefit of attending the State Convention is the “unveiling” of new marketing strategies and the announcement of a new slogan. This year, the Department of Travel is building it’s campaign around the quality of life that’s so abundant in our State with the slogan “In Wisconsin – Life’s So Good!” To learn more about the campaign and how you can take advantage of the State’s marketing to promote your own business, check out the following links:

Events Calendar As proven by Caesar, don’t Assume that your events are correct on the Calendar – make sure that they are. It takes a second to click on www.DoorCounty.com and verify that your events are listed accurately and completely on the Chamber’s website. With the popularity of Millions of visitors a year, you’re missing out on an important marketing opportunity. Check it out now – (I’ll wait here)
From Point A to Point B While we drove to Madison, I was reminded of the inevitability of road construction and how effective signage can diminish the stress of being detoured along an unfamiliar route. Perception is everything and there’s big difference between “Detour” and “Follow me” or “3 miles” and “5 minutes”.
For those of you with guests (or yourselves) that will need to travel through the Milwaukee, Chicago and/or Gary areas in the coming year, I’ve posted two websites to check out. Both are designed to illustrate your options so you don’t have to head into the construction blindly. If your customers see a clear shot through the work centers, they might not be so intimidated by the thought of construction. Maybe you want to bookmark them on your computer or offer the link on your website? Just an idea. Marquette: www.mchange.org Gary – Chicago – Milwaukee: www.gcmtravel.com

Golden Heart Award Nominations - Due March 23rd! The Door County Volunteer Center would like to recognize the value and contributions that young people are making in Door County so, if you know of any young people – (ages 0 to 25) - who are volunteering their time in our Community, please nominate them for recognition at this year’s Golden Heart event.
We're bringing additional value to the event by creating a "get acquainted" event, just before the awards, which will allow the opportunity for all nominees and sponsors to get to connect with each other. Marti Spittell Ziegelbauer will speak at this time as well - highlighting the value that the volunteerism nominees and sponsors bring to the community as well as speaking about volunteering for a lifetime and leaving a legacy through philanthropy. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Chris volctrdc@doorpi.net

Why Belong to the Chamber? Competition. Simply put, there are beautiful places to visit throughout the Midwest and beyond and it’s with your support that we are able to build upon the brand recognition that we enjoy. Imagine the pride and joy of catching one stunning video and/or photo of Door County after another – on the State’s promotions – and, featured on the COVER of the Wisconsin’s 2005 Events & Recreation Guide! But, that positioning is no accident. It is our job to not only keep Door County on the minds of the Traveling Public but, on the minds of anyone who comes in contact with, or influences the traveling public – especially travel writers and members of the media. Together, we have achieved a recognition that far exceeds the effectiveness of doing it alone.
