Aurora Facts and Forecasts

Nothing puts me into an instant state of awe and wonder like the northern lights.  According to an alert issued by NOAA, a large flare was released from the sun's surface today  (Tuesday) and it's headed in our direction.  The alert is only a G-2 but, we could see some auroral activity over the week-end as it takes 3 days for this solar wind to travel from the sun to our planet.

The Latitude for most anywhere in Door County is 45º  (this is why our sundials feature an arm titled at 45º - on average, the Sun's rays are perpendicular to the Sundial's arm.  At the Equator, Sundials arms are mounted paralell to the dial.

The Longitude is 87º.  These "long" lines reach from pole to pole.

Universal Time

Most Space Weather Events are measured in Universal Time.  Universal time is the time when the Sun passes the Earth's Dateline.
